Boxing fans united in rage on Saturday night after Josh Taylor was given a tight hug controversial victory via Jack Catterall in Glasgow.

Taylor was demoted to the 1/8th round of the world lightweight belt fight, but retained her WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts in a decisive match.

That’s because two of the three referees gave Scot the decision, one 114-111 in his favor and 113-112 for him, 113-112 higher for Catterall.

It proved to be a hugely controversial decision for Taylor, but he believes he won it at home.

“I thought I started a bit slow but when I got on the pace I got him with bigger shots,” he told Sky Sports.

“He spoiled a lot, spoiled a lot, he caught me two or three delicious ones, I won’t lie.

“It wasn’t my best performance, I put a lot of pressure on myself because it’s a big game at home.

“I believe I won 100%.”

He added: “Overall, I’ve scored bigger and better shots, so I know I’ve won. He fought well, that’s for sure, but he’s never won a game. fight”

However, Catterall coach Jamie Moore has a very different view – and one that reflects the prevailing mood on social media.

“It’s hard to put into words,” he told Sky Sports. “You’re talking about a kid who has worked all his life to wait for that moment.

“He stepped aside to allow Taylor to be the unification champion. He performed like that, beat the champion in his own backyard and got robbed.

“My son is 16, just getting into boxing, and he’s like, ‘Why should I?’

“It was disgusting. I didn’t know what to say. You asked Jack to come down and talk, as if he could do it, he was heartbroken.”

Catterall’s loss doesn’t go well online, with British heavyweights Dillian Whyte summed up the mood in one word: “Disgusting.”

Former England striker Michael Owen tweeted: “Boxing is a great sport but decisions like these are a disgrace and raise questions about the integrity of the game. #TaylorCatterall”

“What an absolute disgrace. A robbery accounted for the highest percentage. Gutted for Jack Catterall,” one fan wrote.

“It is a disgrace. Done with boxing,” another added.

“Trick boxing at the highest level. Absolute disgrace. He was beaten and the poor shirts were gone. Another said.

“The worst decision in boxing history and Taylor going around saying he won is very embarrassing. That is so embarrasing. This has tarnished the sport I fear,” wrote one disgruntled viewer.

Another added: “Unbelievable. It was a shameful decision. Unless the rules of boxing have changed and now you score points by being hit instead of hitting I don’t see how Taylor won even three or four rounds, never mind the whole match.”

Even the promoter of the fight, BOXXER’s Ben Shalom, admitted to being “embarrassed” by the way the competition was played.

“I’m really embarrassed that I’m promoting this event…” Shalom said. “It’s heartbreaking for Jack.

“I’m embarrassed… Without an investigation, it will harm the sport. I’m not only embarrassed but really angry.”
