A FOUR-year-old boy steals his mother’s car keys and takes her engine for a spin when she wasn’t looking.
Police in the Netherlands said the boy drove into two parked cars on Saturday before removing him from the scene in his pajamas and barefoot.
Concerned passers-by in the city of Utrecht called the police after spotting the boy strolling down the street alone in the cold.
No one was hurt during the extraordinary road trip, but police saw the funny side when they took to Instagram to nickname the boy the “new Max Verstappen”, after the Dutch Formula 1 hero.
Police said the child woke up on Saturday as his father left for work and took his mother’s car keys “to take a ride.”
After officers were called to pick him up, a report came in of an abandoned vehicle nearby that appeared to have hit two parked cars.
It was registered to the boy’s mother, so officers called her.
When police handed the phone to the young driver, police said the cheeky guy was mimicking driving and making gestures of turning a steering wheel.
“We then realized that the child could have been the driver.” The Instagram post continued.
The toddler received a hot chocolate and a teddy bear at the police station before being reunited with his concerned mother.
Together they went to the scene of the accident, where the child – who was described by his mother as “resourceful” – was asked if he could show how the car worked.
In an extraordinary moment, the boy opened the car with the key and put it in the ignition.
He then moved his foot on the clutch and accelerator pedal, police said, as if about to drive away.
Officials asked the children’s parents to hide their car keys in the future to prevent him from getting behind the wheel again.
They added, “Luckily, this mini driver’s adventure ended with a cracker.”
