The boy from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was born with two penises due to the rare birth defect diphallia, but doctors almost removed the only one from which he could urinate before surgeons changed the procedure

A boy who was born with two penises had his larger penis chopped off by doctors.

The Brazilian’s organs were bandaged at the base because of a one in five million condition called diphallia.

The paramedics originally planned to give him the one on the left, which was larger.

But surgeons changed the procedure after the boy’s mother expressed concern that he could only urinate from the right side.

It comes after a boy in Iraq was reported to have been born with three penises, a defect known as triphalia.

Doctors from the Federal University of Sao Paulo acted on the information and successfully performed the operation in the city.

The first case of diphallia was recorded in the 1600s and details of the last report were published in the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

“Diphallia is a rare anomaly,” the paper began. “It comes in a range of guises, from a small extra penis to full duplication.

“We present a two-year-old boy with complete penile duplication. The left penis was the largest.

“Nuclear Magnetic Resonance suggested a body body for each penis and VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram) showed a normal urethra in the right penis and a stricture at the glandular and middle penile urethra of the left penis.

“Cystoscopy through the right penis identified the urethral orifice in the bulbar area. We performed a meatotomy in the left penis to insert the cystoscope and confirmed the blind-ended urethra.

“We decided to remove this penis. The penis was completely degloved and clamped and the corpora removed at the base.”

The journal concludes: “Treatment should always be planned individually, taking into account the anomalies involved, with the aim of achieving satisfactory functional and cosmetic results.”

Surgeons were able to completely remove his extra penis, meaning the unidentified child had no stump.

Earlier this year, an Uzbek boy was born with two fully functional penises.

He lived with this disease for seven years without any physical symptoms.
