A woman has been slammed after saying she expects her friend to lose weight for her wedding

A woman has left people divided after saying one of her bridesmaids refused to lose weight for her wedding – but insists the friend originally offered to lose weight.

The woman said she went dress shopping with her bridesmaids and picked out the perfect attire, but this particular dress only comes in sizes up to 16.

One of the friends couldn’t fit into the dress but offered to take it off for the woman’s big day – so she agreed and bought the dresses for all the bridesmaids.

The wedding is approaching, but the girlfriend hasn’t picked up yet, and now the bride-to-be has split people online after seeking advice on her difficult situation.

On parenting forum Mumsnet, she wrote: “I got engaged about a year and a half ago and we set the date for April 2023.

“Almost a year ago, me and my bridesmaids went on a few trips to shop for dresses. We saw a bridesmaid dress that we all absolutely adored, but turns out they only wore it up to a size 16.

“My best friend who is my maid of honor is a taller girl so it didn’t seem like it was going to work.

“However, she said voluntarily and unprompted that she was going to lose weight for the wedding anyway, so we should have her. I told her she didn’t have to do that but she insisted it was ok so we bought them.

“Fast forward a year and she’s made almost no effort to try to shed the weight. I didn’t raise it with her at all and left her alone, but having just been away for a girls’ weekend it was quite obvious that she is even taller now than when we bought the dresses (and taller than ever before) and doesn’t seem to moderate their food at all

“The wedding is now basically nine months away and I stress that I’ll end up finding new dresses (and paying for them because I’ve already bought the current ones).

“Since then, she has said at various points that they go to the gym, start Slimming World, etc., but have actually done none of that. I was aware that she wasn’t losing weight, but the weekend showed that she’s taller than ever.”

Soon the woman was inundated with comments from other Mumsnet users, and people were at odds as to what to do.

One said: “Just talk to her and see what she wants to do. If she needs a bigger dress you could sell the one you have for her and find another second hand dress in a size/style that goes with the other dresses or she offers to pay.

“I think you’re being unreasonable until you talk to her. If she’s your maid of honor she should be a good friend, so I’m sure you guys could come up with something?”

But another said: “Do you think she’s made the choice to be overweight?

“How would you feel if your ‘girlfriend’ did this to you. Taking her with a bunch of skinny people to go dress shopping and making you feel inferior because the only clothes they have are too small. She probably felt like she couldn’t say no! “

And a third added: “I don’t think you sound like a cow but buying the dress was a mistake.

“Could you get another dress of the right size about a month before your wedding, even if the dress doesn’t match the other bridesmaids’ dresses? I think I would.”

Soon the woman responded in the comments, adding some more context.

She said, “Wow, that’s some big assumptions!

“I never said she made a choice to be overweight. There was also no reason to make her feel less than. The shop had dresses in larger sizes, but it so happened that these were the ones (and she was the one who saw them first and said how beautiful they were) that we loved.

“I asked the shop assistant for sizes very discreetly, knowing they don’t do everything in larger sizes, and didn’t say anything in front of the other girls, just to her afterwards.”
