Brendan Fraser among honorees at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival
Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell and Cate Blanchett were among the honorees at the 34th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The annual festival returns live January 5-16 this year for the first time since 2020 and kicks off the 2023 awards season.

Speaking to US magazine Variety on the event’s red carpet, Fraser said he was “excited” to be back at a live festival.
“I hope that I get to meet people I admire from afar… We’re all back, we can do this again, it’s exciting,” he said.
“All of those honored tonight, I look forward to having a moment with them and to appreciate each other’s work.”

Fraser was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Critics’ Choice Award for her role in the psychological drama.
He plays obese English teacher Charlie trying to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, played by Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink.

Speaking to Variety, Farrell praised his co-star Brendan Gleeson and said their next project together couldn’t come “soon enough”.

Butler and Deadwyler received breakthrough performance by actor and actress respectively, and filmmaker Sarah Polley was recognized with director of the year award.
Butler was presented with his award by director Elvis Baz Luhrmann.

The opening night of the Palm Springs International Film Festival comes less than a week before the Golden Globe Awards on January 10 and the Critics’ Choice Awards on January 15.
