Brendan Fraser says he won’t be in the Golden Globes

Brendan Fraser, whose performance in The Whale makes him a likely contender for this year’s awards, has said he would not attend the Golden Globes in January if nominated.

In 2018, Fraser said he was stalked by longtime Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) member Philip Berk, the former president of the organization behind the Golden Globes.

Fraser said the incident happened at a luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in 2003.

Berk, a member from South Africa, was expelled from the HFPA last year after calling Black Lives Matter “a racist hate movement”.

No, I will not participate. It’s because of the history I have with themBrendan Fraser

Last year’s Golden Globes was nearly canceled after the organization was embroiled in a scandal over ethics violations and revealed that the group then did not include black voting members.

Many stars, journalists and studios say they are boycotting the Golden Globes.

Earlier this year, the HFPA, after reforming, said the 80th Golden Globes would be broadcast on January 10 on NBC.

But Fraser won’t be there.

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I respect the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Fraser told GQ Magazine in a cover story published Wednesday.

When asked if he would attend the ceremony if nominated, Fraser said: “No, I won’t.”

“It’s because of the history that I have with them,” Fraser added.

“And my mother did not raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but it doesn’t have to be.

In Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which hits theaters December 9, Fraser plays a reclusive English teacher with obesity who tries to reconnect with her estranged daughter.

He’s been nominated for outstanding lead role at the upcoming Gotham Awards and is considered by many as a best actor nominee at the Academy Awards.

After an internal investigation, the HFPA concluded that Berk had “inappropriate contact” with Fraser, who recently starred in the hit TV series Quiet Americans in 2003.

But the HFPA said it was “considered a joke rather than a sexual flirtation”.

Berk remained a member of the group until his expulsion in 2021.

Fraser told GQ: “I knew they were going to close.

“I knew they were going to throw the can on the street. I know they will be ahead of the story. I know that I definitely have no future with that system. … I think it’s because it’s so thorny, sharp, or annoying that people want to go ahead and invest emotionally in the situation.”
