Brian Flores, who was fired as coach of the Miami Dolphins last month and was denied new work with other clubs, sued NFL and its 32 teams allege they discriminated against him and other Black coaches in their hiring.
Flores’ filing in federal court comes just days after the Giants, one of the teams he interviewed, name Brian Daboll, who is white, is their new head coach.
Flores cited messages he said were sent by his former boss, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. In the message, Belichick appeared to congratulate Flores on landing the Giant’s job, which he has yet to interview. Flores responded by asking if Belichick planned to send a message to Daboll, who interviewed before Flores’s scheduled meeting.
Respondent replied: “I think they are naming Daboll. I’m sorry about that. BB”
In a statement, Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said the team is “confident in the process that led to the hiring of Brian Daboll” and “Flores will join the conversation to become our head coach until eleventh hour”. A Patriots spokesman said he did not anticipate that the team would issue a response.
The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Screenshots of the conversation initiated by Belichick, the famously tight-lipped trainer, and as well as other anecdotes paint an unflattering portrait of the Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross, provides a rare insight into the league’s business in a class-action lawsuit against widespread discrimination.
Flores was the son of Honduran immigrants to the Brownsville area of Brooklyn. He led the Dolphins for three years, including two winning seasons, and in the suit said he was “humiliated in the process when the New York Giants forced him into mock interviews to try to try to appear to give Black candidates a legitimate opportunity to get the job. “
In a statement, Flores said he understood that “I may be venturing into coaching the game I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me in ensuring that positive change is made for generations to come. “.
