Bridgerton: Simone Ashley teases series three plot

Bridgerton star Simone Ashley has teased the return of her characters and co-star Jonathan Bailey for the third season of the hit Netflix show.

The 27-year-old says the story of newlyweds Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton will return in the hotly-anticipated third season of the Regency Age drama.

The show’s latest hit season marked a blossoming relationship between the pair, ending the season with their marriage.

During an appearance on ITV’s This Morning, Simone told co-hosts Josie Gibson and Vernon Kay that she won’t be reprising her role in the fourth season of Sex Education, as she is ” Bridgerton gal now”.

Instead, the star said she’s “definitely” going to be in Bridgerton’s third season, adding to Kate’s backstory: “She’s the head of the family now. The Viscountess, is married to Anthony, and as of this point a year later, so I am really delighted.”

Netflix has renewed Bridgerton, based on Quinn’s series of eight novels and produced by Grey’s Anatomy’s Shonda Rhimes, for a third and fourth season.

Simone has previously said that newlyweds Kate and Anthony’s story is “just beginning” after the second “push and pull” plot between enemies into their lovers.

She told Deadline: “There were troubles with the family and then they found each other at the end. I think things are just getting started.

“I would like to see Kate just loosen up a little more and play more in season three and swim in that circle of love together. I think both are worth it. ”

Simone teased Kate’s backstory in season three, adding: “She’s currently in charge of the household chores and she has a big pair of boots to put on. I think she can do it.

“I wanted to keep that soft and vulnerable for Kate and she can share that with Anthony.

“I’m just happy for her to have a home and a family. I’m happy to see her grow. I think I’d like to see Kate be braver, less tough, and have a stronger heart.”

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, has confirmed that the series will begin filming a third season this summer, “sometimes between June and August”.

If the Netflix show continues to follow through on the books’ blueprint, the third season will focus on Benedict’s brother Bridgerton’s love story across the class divide, in keeping with the third novel by Julia Quinn is An Offer From a Gentleman.

But actor Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict, has hinted that this may not be the case with fans speculating that a third season could instead focus on Colin Bridgerton’s romance and Penelope.

Luke told Entertainment Weekly: “The books are the books, and the show is completely rooted in the books, but it’s not tied to the books.

“The books will indicate that the next one is Benedict, but we don’t know for sure because the show is a gig, and the show has a license to do everything.

“Anyway, the show was a synergistic effort, and we felt like there was so much for us to take part in even if you weren’t in the driver’s seat.

“It’s not like I’m sitting around waiting for my big moment, because it’s a huge team effort, and that’s what pleases me. As long as Benedict continues to be discovered, I’m happy.”
