FOLLOWING the release of the agenda for the July City Council meeting, the Friends of Brighton and Hove Citizens Action Group is extremely concerned at the amount of council time wasted on irrelevant matters.
In their nominations for this month, both the Greens and Labor parties have included points urging the council to consider the US Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision on abortion in America.
It’s not a matter for the council. It’s not even a national or international issue that affects this country. It’s a question of another country’s internal politics. It has nothing to do with the leadership of Brighton and Hove City Council. It’s not even a green issue.
It is an insult to local taxpayers that the Greens and Labor continue to waste valuable City Council time by insisting that these matters be discussed, especially when they only hold seven or eight full council meetings a year.
During this Council period nuclear weapons were discussed twice at the behest of Labor and numerous other issues at UN level were raised by the Greens. Hours and hours of council time wasted.
These councilors are elected to lead the city council. They do an appalling job with basic services not working properly as parking permits are not issued, sidewalks are not weeded and trash cans are not collected.
These are the issues that urgently need to be discussed, not matters of the US Supreme Court.
That’s what voters should remember at the next election — there’s no point in voting for another council more concerned with what’s happening in America than on our doorstep.
Meanwhile, our city and its precious heritage rot, essential services are cut and neglected, and entire neighborhoods become graffiti ghettos.
