Brighton Pier Group Chief Operating Officer Anne Accord said: “The forecast for the weekend and next week is looking good.

“It has been a long time since we have experienced such a sustained hot spell and those of us who remember the very hot summer of 1976 will know that a trip to the sea is the ideal way to start this amazing start to the summer season to enjoy.

“This could be the busiest weekend in a long time and we look forward to welcoming our residents and visitors to enjoy the sunshine and enjoy the best of our city.”

No summer’s day is complete without ice cream and Maria Takeuchi, co-owner of Boho Gelato, said they’re expecting a very busy weekend as beachgoers indulge in a refreshing treat to soak up the sun.

“Even last weekend was absolutely manic and I expect it to get even busier.

“I think last weekend people went a little crazy because it was the first bit of sun but now that we’ve had it for a while people will come to Brighton and want to enjoy themselves.

“We’re well known in Brighton and have been here for 13 years so I think we’re quite a target in warm weather.

The award-winning independent retailer has produced over 500 flavors since opening in 2010, but which flavor is the most sought after by shoppers during the heatwave?

“Right now the tart cherry is the most popular – it’s straight milk ice cream, with the Sussex milk we get delivered every morning and the tart Italian amarena cherry goes so well together; It’s tangy, it’s creamy and once you taste it you’re hooked.”

Her other popular flavors include a vegan peanut butter sea salt caramel flavor as well as the classic pistachio and carrot cake, which Maria says is a favorite of Brighton YouTuber Zoella.

Those heading to Brighton Marina for the weekend can cool off and have fun at Globalls, which features a glow-in-the-dark gulf and 1920s-inspired bar.

A spokeswoman for the venue said: “We expect this weekend to be busy but we have three courses open now so there’s plenty of room for the crowds.

“We also have DJs playing in the bar to entertain people who want to cool off and have fun.

“Brighton Marina is lovely in the sun and has everything you need here so it’s perfect in this weather.”

The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning for Sunday through late Tuesday, with the heatwave causing the potential for serious illness or death.

Temperatures are set to peak at 33C in Brighton on Tuesday, with mercury potentially rising to 40C for the first time in some parts of the UK.
