Brighton City Council ‘very saddened’ under Queen’s coronation crowds

A COUNCIL, who was among those who cheered the Queen at her coronation, has expressed sadness at her death.

Brighton and Hove Councilor Dawn Barnett said the Queen was “like everyone’s grandma” and a “lovely person”.

Cllr Barnett, who helped lead an anniversary event at her Hangleton ward earlier this year, said: “It will be a long time before we have another monarch like her, certainly not in my lifetime.”

At an event in Hangleton to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee in July, dozens of residents sang songs, waved union flags and toasted the Queen in celebration.

Speaking to The Argus at the time, Cllr Barnett reflected on her memories of joining the crowd in London for the Queen’s coronation in 1953.

She said: “I was 11 and caught the midnight train up from Brighton station and we were right outside the Abbey.

“It was raining and we were behind that line of soldiers so we had cardboard periscopes to see over their heads and we saw the carriage coming in.

“I was only 11 but it’s still on my mind.

“I love the Queen, I think she’s a wonderful woman. She’s so special and so loyal – she’s spent her whole life with and for others.”
