Brighton contractors make spelling mistakes outside of ‘shcool’

IT MIGHT be time for road builders to go back to school.

A team painting new road markings outside Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) on Chalky Road for the start of the new term made an unfortunate mistake…Spelling School ‘SHCOOL’.

The bug was spotted by parents and children this morning when the new 7th and 11th graders arrived for the first day of school.

One person who saw the misspelling said: “Hopefully the person who wrote the sign doesn’t have a PACA degree as that would be so embarrassing as they would have to attend some evening classes.

“I think he should get an F grade and some extra homework.”

Brighton and Hove Councilor Peter Atkinson, who represents North Portslade Borough, also saw the mistake. He said, “They obviously didn’t have a spell checker with them.”

The council quickly corrected the embarrassing error.

A spokesman said: “Unfortunately, our contractor who is doing our resurfacing work on Chalky Road outside of PACA originally misspelled the word ‘school’.

“This has now been fixed at no cost to the council.”

Pupils of all years return from the summer holidays on Monday.

Public misspellings are nothing new.

In 2018, Lloyds Bank came under fire for their sign outside their Kemp Town branch with the address ‘Kempston’.

A few years earlier, Highways Agency officials had misspelled the famous opera town of Glyndebourne as Glynbourne on three signs along the A27.

And a giant sign welcoming people to Brighton’s North Laine Conversation Area in place of the nature reserve was popular with residents but was eventually removed. Brighton contractors make spelling mistakes outside of ‘shcool’
