Brighton GP practice halts family planning over registration issue

A GP practice offering regulated services it was not allowed to provide was branded as inadequate.

Regency Surgery in Old Steine, Brighton, immediately stopped offering its family planning appointments after inspectors found it was not registered to offer them.

The practice has been placed under “special measures” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for not keeping patients safe and from “preventable harm”.

Risks to patients, staff and visitors “were not always” assessed, monitored or managed and in an effective manner, inspectors said in a report.

The report was published on September 7th.

It turned out that Regency Square’s operation did not encourage quality care and was judged to be inadequate overall.

“I put this service under special measures,” the inspector said in his report.

“Services placed in special measures will be reviewed again within six months.

“If insufficient improvements have been made, leaving a rating of insufficient for a key issue or overall, we will take action in accordance with our enforcement procedures to initiate the process to prevent the provider from operating the service.

“This will result in them canceling their registration or changing the terms of their registration within six months if they do not improve.

“The service is under review and could be escalated to urgent enforcement action if necessary.

“If appropriate, another inspection will be carried out within a further six months and if there is no sufficient improvement, we will close the service, accepting our proposal to remove this site or deregister the provider.”

However, it was noted that Regency Surgery staff were very satisfied in terms of support from the management team.

In addition, the employees were certified as having good opportunities for advancement.

The operation is said to have taken “immediate action” over a lack of family planning registration and submitted forms to the CQC, which are now being reviewed.
