Brighton Labor MP slams government’s Austerity 2.0 plan

Lloyd Russell-Moyle has called for a stand against the government’s “Austerity 2.0” economic policy.

In a new video shared on social media, the Brighton Kemptown MP was backed by Labor MPs Olivia Blake and Kim Johnson, who criticized Jeremy Hunt’s plans to cut public services to fill a gap in government finances .

Lloyd Russell-Moyle said: “New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has just announced his answer to the nation’s economic woes – and it’s called Austerity 2.0.

β€œThe new chancellor says he has to make ‘difficult decisions’, but we know what that really means; Services are being cut, nurses’ salaries are falling and waiting times are increasing.

β€œFor those of us who have suffered from austerity measures, we know that the economy is not growing as a result. It kills it.”

Mr Russell-Moyle notes that ambulance times have reached record highs as the country also has “more food banks than McDonald’s”.

Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson said: “Whoever is leading the Tory party, it’s time to say no more.”

All three MPs in the video are members of a left-wing faction of the Labor Party known as the Socialist Campaign Group, of which former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn is a member.

The new prime minister must decide whether to go ahead with the planned Halloween statement outlining how the government intends to get public finances back on track, Downing Street said.

Work at Whitehall continues, led by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, to prepare the medium-term budget plan, due to be announced on October 31, along with updated economic forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

However, a spokeswoman for Number 10 said it was up to Liz Truss’s successor to decide whether to proceed with this approach and with the same timeline. Brighton Labor MP slams government’s Austerity 2.0 plan
