A MAN who repeatedly stabbed someone in the head with scissors before fleeing to evade capture has been arrested.
Ryan McLean, 39, from Brighton, was caught on video surveillance on February 27 chasing his victim into a supermarket on South Street in Portslade before brutally assaulting him in a storeroom.
He had previously been seen chasing his victim’s car at high speed through Portslade just before noon, then exited and continued his pursuit on foot.
Despite an attempt by a store worker to stop McLean from stalking the victim, a 29-year-old man, he made his way through and carried out the attack.
He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries while McLean fled the scene.
After a manhunt, including a £3,000 reward from Crimestoppers, he was arrested with the help of Merseyside Police in the Dingle area of Liverpool.
Upon his arrest, McLean asked arresting officers, “Is this about the southern thing?”
McLean pleaded guilty to intentionally causing grievous bodily harm (AM) and possessing an assault weapon in a public place.
He was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court to 33 months in prison for GBH and six months for possession of an assault weapon.
McLean also received an additional four-week sentence for violating a suspended sentence for knife possession and drug driving.
All three movements run simultaneously.
Detective Inspector Neil Phillips said: “Ryan McLean is a violent offender with a significant criminal history and we are delighted to have taken him off the streets where he can no longer harm the public.
“Despite his attempts to evade capture, we and our partners in Merseyside Police were able to locate him and bring him to justice.
“The age-old message ‘You can run, but you can’t hide’ still rings true, and that phrase should serve as a warning to anyone trying to hide from the law that they will be found and justice served.”
