Brighton mum braves the cold at the Greenland half marathon

A mother of two prepares to run a marathon in the Arctic Circle by exercising in a custom-built refrigerator.

Nicky Chisholm, 50, will take part in the Coolest Half Marathon On Earth, where she will run in freezing conditions in Greenland.

To mimic the cold, Nicky wrapped up warm and tested himself at the University of Brighton’s Environment Extremes Laboratory.

Nicky, who lives near Brighton Marina, said: “I’m part excited, part scared.

“I wanted to do something crazy and ridiculous, but I also wanted to be a good role model for my kids.

“I spent my morning in a room with minus 20 degrees. It was absolutely insane, my brain froze.”

Nicky, mother of teenagers Calan, 17, and Fin, 14, said her lab training sessions were particularly important in testing the kit she will be using for the run in late October.

The half marathon, in which only 60 to 80 runners from all over the world take part, takes Nicky across Greenland’s glaciers and the arctic tundra at average temperatures of minus 16 degrees Celsius.

She said she’s “really proud” to be a good role model for her kids, adding, “It’s really good for her to see how her mom is doing it and that I’m not just a mom.”

Nicky has been training for the feat for over a year, which has included a series of long distance runs, and is adjusting to the conditions that await her.

Runners complete the half marathon in spiked shoes to improve the terrain and the run must be completed in four hours.

Nicky is doing it to raise funds for two charities, the domestic violence charity Safe in Sussex and the Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice near Angmering.

She has supported the two charities several times in the past, including rappelling from a castle.

She has raised around £500 so far but wants to reach £5,000. Anyone who would like to donate to Nicky’s cause can do so at Brighton mum braves the cold at the Greenland half marathon
