Brighton Pride organizers are calling for a boycott of the World Cup in Qatar

Brighton and Hove Pride have joined other Pride organizers in calling for a boycott of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The organizers of the city’s annual Pride celebrations, along with Manchester Pride, Birmingham Pride and Pride London, have criticized Fifa for a “total lack of consideration for LGBTQ+ people” as teams prepare to compete in the inaugural World Cup, which will be held in the Middle East will be held.

Qatar has come under scrutiny and condemnation in recent months for its anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, which punishes homosexuality with up to seven years in prison and death for Muslims.

In a joint statement, Pride organizers called for a boycott of the World Cup “to support the LGBTQ+ community worldwide”.

They said: “By deciding to host the World Cup in Qatar, Fifa has demonstrated a complete lack of consideration for LGBTQ+ people.

“The message Fifa seems to be sending to the world is that they don’t think LGBTQ+ people are or should be involved in sport – be it as athletes or as fans.

“Also, they don’t seem to think protecting LGBTQ+ people is something they need to be involved with.

“Even when these issues came to light, FIFA disregarded the needs of queer people or did not consider them important and proceeded with Qatar as the host country.

“As such a huge organization with tremendous power and influence, Fifa is in an incredible position to advance LGBTQ+ rights in football and sport, but has completely ignored LGBTQ+ people – presumably in favor of profit.”

The group of organizers is urging bars and venues not to broadcast World Cup matches, refusing to watch any matches and writing to Fifa and tournament sponsors to show their support for LGBTQ+ people living in Qatar .

The calls come after Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a recent interview with Sky News that LGBTQ+ fans attending World Cup matches in Qatar should avoid public displays of affection.

“I think it’s important that as a visitor to a country, you respect the culture of your host country,” he said.

Qatar has also been criticized for the deaths of migrant workers building stadiums for the tournament. Brighton Pride organizers are calling for a boycott of the World Cup in Qatar
