Brighton pub charging £9 a pint for Pride says it will donate money

A city center pub has defended the increase in its drink prices during Pride weekend.

Tavern Saint James in Madeira Place, Brighton, increased the cost of a pint to £9 on Friday night.

The average price in the city is around £5.

The punters were said to be stunned, with one online reviewer branding the pub “embarrassing”.

But the venue has defended its actions, saying it will donate the extra money to a good cause.

“We’re giving the money to the Rainbow Fund Pride charity,” said Victoria Bennett, director of Tavern Saint James.

“Also we have to pay for security, pay staff higher wages, DJ costs.

“But it’s crazy. Some pubs went up to £15.”

The Rainbow Fund said it was not aware of any proposed donations from the Saint James Tavern.

A spokesman said companies planning to donate usually contact the charity beforehand, although this is not always the case.

Companies almost always advertise or inform people who buy a product that a percentage goes to the Rainbow Fund, the spokesman said.

Revelers slammed the bar online as it hiked prices “halfway through the night”.

One person said: “They tried to charge me £9 for a pint, just regular beer, none of that fancy pants stuff.

“I felt sorry for the staff who had to explain to the players. They hadn’t set the prices, the owner had them. I would watch your wallet if you decide to visit. I would avoid this place at all costs.”

Another said: “This bar is actually embarrassing.

“Like they’ve bumped their prices up to ‘Pride prices’ in the middle of the night and think that’s okay – £9 a pint is disgusting. Owners need to get their act together and see what Pride weekend is all about.”

The Argus contacted the Saint James Tavern for further clarification but received no reply.

It comes after footage emerged recently showing an altercation outside the pub after workers went on strike over pay.

The footage shows a man holding a thick chain before walking towards the person filming.
