Brighton Santa Dash raises thousands for children’s charities

Thousands of pounds have been raised for charity after hundreds of people took part in an annual Santa Claus sprint across the coast.

Despite the cold weather, around 660 people took part in the sponsored 5km run, which started on Hove seafront, headed west along the coast and then returned to the start line.

The Santas brought smiles and festive cheer to passers-by and raised over £7,000 for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity.

Proceeds from the event will go to the charity’s Christmas appeal, which aims to bring some festive cheer to children and families spending time in hospital.

Celebrating attendance at this year’s event, Emma Cunliffe, Supporter Engagement Manager at Rockinghorse said, “The Santa Dash is such an iconic event and it’s always great to see everyone every December, especially all the kids and families.”

The race is organized by Commonwealth silver medalist John Gladwin and Children’s Charity – the race’s main charity partner since 2015.

Mr Gladwin said: “The Santa Dash has been around for about 18 years now and we’re still getting large numbers of people. It’s fantastic that people keep coming back and supporting it.”

Among the runners was three-year-old Adam, who wanted to raise money after spending the first week of his life at Royal Sussex County Hospital’s Trevor Mann Baby Unit in 2019.

His father Andy said: “Adam chose Santa Sash because he wanted to help other children.

“The staff at Trevor Mann Baby Unit are amazing and are helping so many families in incredibly difficult situations, so we wanted to give something back.”

Adam said: “I had fun – I enjoyed all the cheers when I was done and my mum gave me a toy reindeer to say I’m well done.”
