Brighton’s Enock Mwepu due to illness which ruled him out for Zambia

Enock Mwepu has denied claims he does not want to play for Zambia.

The Albion midfielder has been discharged from hospital after illness ruined his most recent international trip.

But his chances of making a return visit to Anfield on Saturday appear in doubt.

Mwepu missed Zambia’s two friendlies after Mali teamed up with the side in Bamako.

He was pulled from games due to an unspecified illness.

Mwepu said his inability to play “created a lot of tension among our own fans”.

The Zambian FA reported late Sunday that he had been released from Polyclinique Pasteur de Bamako, where he spent four days.

They tweeted a photo of him smiling and looking good.

The FAZ said Mwepu would “probably receive further treatment” after his return to England.

Albion are preparing for Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge on Saturday when they visit Liverpool.

It is the game in which Mwepu scored his first Premier League goal almost a year ago.

In a social media post, he hit back at accusations from some Zambia fans that he was not interested in playing for his country.

Leicester striker Patson Daka also missed the games in Mali.

Mwepu wrote: “We traveled to Bamako and focused on honoring the vocation as it is always an honor and a great privilege to represent the national team.

“Nevertheless, due to the seriousness of the situation (illness), we could not play, which made me spend at least 3-4 days in the hospital in Bamako, of which the doctors cannot disclose everything in detail that really happened.

“I just want to let the fans know that as much as you all want me or Patson or any other player to want to play for the national team, those things are more important than football, especially when it comes to health and family.
