Fatboy Slim has revealed his regrets at meeting his hero, David Bowie.
The DJ, whose real name is Norman Cook, shared some of his fondest memories of Brighton during an interview with Kevin Bishop at Brighton Beach House.
But he also shared some lesser-known stories, including how he wished he’d never met Bowie.
Norman spoke openly about getting sober and his regrets and Kevin asked, “Do you feel like you should meet your heroes?”
Norman hesitated. “Um. Most of them.”
“Is there anyone you’re like, ‘Uh, I wish I’d never met them,'” Kevin said.
“Well, there is one,” Norman said. “This is David Bowie.”
The audience gasped when one person said, “Really?”
Norman then related an anecdote about a private show Bowie had put on in London as a warm-up for a big tour.
It was around the peak of Fatboy’s fame and he had been invited by the tour organizers and sat in a box with Mick Jagger.
He later attended the after party.
Norman said, “I’ve had a few drinks, by the way.”
The Bromley-born DJ, now a permanent Brighton boy, used this connection to strike up a conversation with Bowie, who also grew up there.
“A Bromley boy, can I have a fag of yours for someone else?” he asked.
He said Bowie looked at him blankly and gave him a cigarette.
“I’m Fatboy Slim, by the way,” Norman said.
Bowie dismissed him by saying, “Yes, I know,” and continued his conversation with someone else.
Norman said: “I was just drained.”
He assured the audience that Bowie was “perfectly polite” but ultimately unfazed by Norman.
He said: “Most of the people you love are really lovable and the bigger they are the more lovable they tend to be, they don’t have to prove their ego or that they’re smarter than you.
“The big ones are just really nice people.”
