Graham Potter says Albion starts the new season with the first goal of staying on top.
But he adds there is room for more ambition in 2022-23.
The Seagulls are entering their sixth consecutive top season — and 10th in their history — after finishing an all-time best ninth last season.
Ahead of the opening game at Manchester United, head coach Potter said: “They are fighting to stay in the Premier League.
“You should never lose sight of that and you should have enough respect and humility for the competition you are starting from.
“But you always have to have ambition and get points and see where that takes you.
“That’s something to worry about in June or late May.”
