Brighton’s Joe Black speaks ahead of the RuPaul DragCon performance

A drag race star crushed by the dreaded Brighton Curse has spoken out ahead of his appearance at next year’s RuPaul’s DragCon UK.

Eliminated in the first round of the second series of Drag Race UK, Joe Black will be making his debut at the event, which is being held at the ExCel London in Greenwich from 6th to 8th January.

The avant-garde retro cabaret queen is looking forward to meeting other queens.

“It’s going to be pretty exciting to be in the middle of all this hustle and bustle,” Joe said.

“Also for the first time there were so many British drag race people in the same room.

“I look forward to meeting Kam Hugh from Drag Race France. We spoke online and I love her aesthetic. So I’m looking forward to finally getting to know her.”

When it comes to outfits, Joe goes for a bright aesthetic: “Most likely neon.

“Lean into that neo-noir vibe. Are you wearing a trench coat? Flasher vibes.

“But then I open the mantle and it’s just hundreds of hamsters and I release them at the fairgrounds.”

The 32-year-old also spoke about the struggles as a performer during the Covid pandemic and the pandemic’s impact on audiences coming to shows.

“I missed the audience the most,” said Joe.

“That visceral connection with a live audience.

“I feel like people appreciate it more. I feel like most of the shows have had a new fire behind them since we got back into the world.”

The Brighton queen also shared her hopes for the future of drag.

“Variety and display of all kinds of art in it,” Joe said.

“Kings, Queens and everything in between.”

It’s been a busy year for the Queen, who has been touring with a new solo show called Club Cataclysm throughout October and November.

He’s also launched his new podcast, Joe Black: Meets.
