Brighton’s Shelter Hall is dropping Pride party plans

A SEAFRONT venue has dropped plans to host clubbing-style parties until 2am on the same weekend as Brighton Pride.

Venue tenant, Sessions Markets Limited, planned two ticketed events on the Friday and Saturday of Pride weekend at its premises in King’s Road Arches, Brighton.

The current license allows for the sale of alcoholic beverages from 8am to 11:30pm – but also requires the venue to provide lavish food.

At least three of the seven kitchens must serve food until 10.30pm on summer weekends – and at least one kitchen must stay open until at least 11pm.

Sussex Police have rejected plans to allow a DJ to play music until 2am and allow customers to stand while drinking – something the current license doesn’t allow.

Sessions Markets had said all seven kitchens would stay open until 1.30am, but that wasn’t enough to convince police and officials.

Inspector Michelle Palmer-Harris of Sussex Police said the venue plans to accommodate 400 people and create a “nightclub/dance floor”.

She said Pride was the largest single event in Brighton and Hove and was taking place for the first time since 2019 due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 400,000 people attended the event in 2018, and more are expected this year, she said.

She said: “The premises have never been open for business during a Pride event and so have no experience or knowledge of operations during the citywide festival or how this might look for Shelter Hall as individual premises.”

The application was due to go before a three-member licensing panel on June 29, but was canceled after the venue scrapped its plans. Brighton’s Shelter Hall is dropping Pride party plans
