A FIVE-Year-Old girl was killed when an adult skier lunged at her at high speed while she was skiing in the Alps.
The child was in a class on a slope when a man is said to have barged into her – sparking a police investigation.
The girl was airlifted to the hospital, but tragically died before she arrived while still on the helicopter.
It is understood that the family are Britons living in Geneva and having a second home in Les Carroz, a family-friendly ski resort in France.
Last night, a 40-year-old local man was detained by the police and an investigation was opened for manslaughter.
The horrifying accident happened at around 11am yesterday at the Flaine ski resort.
The girl who took part in the Serpentine ski run was classified as “blue”, which means an easy slope.
She is taking a group ski lesson organized by the national ski school, Ecole du Ski Français (ESF), with four other children.
The kids are in a single file behind the instructor near the edge of the piste.
The prosecutor overseeing the investigation said: “The child was in a file behind the group and was about to turn right when he was hit with great force by a skier who was rushing at high speed, who tried to trying to avoid her in vain.”
An investigation has been opened into manslaughter due to an alleged “breach of duty of safety and caution”.
The skier, a volunteer firefighter, is said to be “in a state of severe shock”.
He performed first aid on the side of the piste. There was even a doctor present.
Despite resuscitation efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at 1pm when he was airlifted to the hospital by helicopter.
An autopsy will take place on Monday to determine the cause of death.
