A former British Army sniper who is taking part in the heavy fighting in Ukraine believes it is his duty to fight against the “modern-day Hitler” Vladimir Putin.
Retired soldier Shane Matthews, carrying 60kg of medical supplies that had been donated to him, said he would go to the front lines to treat wounded Ukrainians and train civilians to fight Putin’s forces.
But the veteran, 34, added that he was ready to take up arms and fight if necessary.

Mr Matthews is believed to be one of the first Britons to join Ukraine’s newly formed “international brigade”, which President Zelenskyy announced on Sunday.
He will be flying out with two Ukrainians living in the UK and meeting some friends from his regiment who have also joined the war effort.
Mr. Matthews added: “My friends are not surprised that I want to do it, they expect it. My family is not too happy.
“I have some other people from my regiment who I am meeting there. There are six of us who have all done the same tours in Afghanistan. It will make the fighting a lot easier. because we both know how each other works.”
His mission has been supported by the veterans community across West Sussex and Hampshire, who have assisted him in delivering armor and medical supplies.
