A BRITISH man has been found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend’s toddler daughter – whom he also murdered.
Robert Leeming admitted to flying into a rage and beating his ex, Jasmine Lovett, 25, with a hammerbut denied the murder of Aliyah Sanderson, then almost two years old.
However, Leeming, 37, has now been found guilty by a court in Canada of murdering the child, where it is alleged he likely let Aliyah “gasp” and die while out smoking.
The HGV driver from Marlborough, Wiltshire, moved to Canada in 2013 and was living with Jasmine and Aliyah at his home in Calgary at the time of their death.
Leeming had previously had an “intimate relationship” with the young mother, but it is understood they were not romantically involved when she was killed.
He initially insisted he “did nothing wrong” after being questioned about their disappearance, but later told police he lost his temper and attacked Jasmine with a hammer and shot him. her head, Mirror report.
Their bodies were discovered in shallow graves in Kananaskis, 70 miles west of their home in Calgary.
On the first day of trial, Leeming pleaded guilty to murdering Jasmine but not to murdering Aliyah.
Leeming said Aliyah accidentally died after falling down the stairs and he killed Jasmine when she accused him of harming the girl.
The trial saw Aliyah die of head trauma from the force of the blow, and Leeming described Aliyah as a “wonderful kid” and said he didn’t hurt her.
But prosecutor Doug Taylor said a fall was inconsistent with forensic evidence and “defied logic”.
He told the court: “He lied again and again after killing Jasmine, and so did Crown, Aliyah. He lied to the police. He lied to the public. He lied to his ex-wife. He lied to his master.
“All of this is a calculated plan to get away with murder – and not just one, but two.”
Yesterday, Judge Keith Yamauchi of the Queen’s Court said Leeming lied in his testimony and found him guilty of Aliyah’s murder.
He told the court: “He either had intent to cause Aliyah’s death or intended to cause physical harm to Aliyah potentially causing her death,” and questioned why the driver of the HGV did not try to help the girl after he accused her of falling down the stairs. .
Justice Yamauchi added: “This court does not know the exact time at which Mr. Leeming attacked Aliyah; however, they were unable to accurately suspect that he did.”
He was also found to have lied about 21 times in his testimony.
Aliyah’s grandmother, Kim Blankart, said after the trial: “I want to get up and hug the judge,” Daily Star report.
She added: “Obviously happy isn’t the best word. But we’re pleased we got justice and relieved it’s over.
“We can go back to healing and get on with our lives.”
