Local reports suggest the Brit was hit by a Mini being driven by a suspected drunk driver while on holiday in Mugla, near the popular resort of Bodrum in Turkey, and died at the scene
A British woman has died in Turkey after being hit by a suspected drunk driver.
The woman, who is believed to be a pensioner from Middlesbrough, Teesside, was on holiday in the popular area of Bodrum in the countryside when the tragedy struck.
She was walking back to her hotel around 2am when the driver of a Mini Cooper lost control and climbed onto the sidewalk, according to local reports.
The force of the impact pushed her against a wall and she was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.
The UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed the death of a British woman and is in contact with other authorities on the matter.
An FCDO spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Turkey and are in contact with local authorities.”
Ms Ward’s friends told a local Turkish online newspaper that they were returning home today ahead of Monday’s incident in the Mugla area – at Adnan Mendered Street and Gumbet Bars Street.
Images taken at the scene showed a group of shocked bystanders gathering after the crash.
The next day an awning was hung over the wall and a broken bollard lay across the sidewalk.
A woman has reportedly been arrested and an investigation has been launched by Turkish authorities, the local newspaper reports.
Bodrum is a popular holiday destination for Brits, with the province of Mugla some 12 miles inland.
Turkey is considered a great value travel destination and attracts visitors from all over the world.
Britons exchanging £500 can expect to get over 50 per cent more in Turkish lira – the equivalent of almost £167 extra – for their pounds.
