Britain is expected to have only its third World No. 1 tennis Player, with Joe Salisbury to follow in both’s footsteps andy and Jamie Murray. Salisbury will rise to the top of the world doubles rankings following this week’s action at the Miami Open.
This came after he reached the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament in Miami alongside his partner Rajeev Ram. The pair edged Feliciano Lopez and Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 7-6 to move into the last eight of the competition.
Victory in his last 16 duels alongside Ram means Salisbury have now done enough to climb to the top of the world rankings. His coronation will be official next Monday after the conclusion of the Miami Open
Salisbury and Ram’s partnership has proven impressive in recent years, winning six titles in three seasons. That includes two Grand Slams at the 2020 Australian Open and last year’s US Open title in New York.
After the ranking update next Monday, the Brit will replace Croatian Mate Pavic at the top of the world rankings. This comes after Pavic’s Miami Open ended early after he and partner Nikola Mektic were KO’d by Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov.
Salisbury is only the third Briton to top the world rankings and the first not of the Murray family. Elder Murray sibling Jamie became the first player from the British Isles to become world No. 1 after topping the doubles list in 2016.

He was then followed to the top by his brother Andy, who rose to the top of the world rankings in men’s singles that same year after beating Novak Djokovic at the ATP Tour Finals. After winning the Miami Open on Sunday, Salisbury described his rise to the top of the world as “pretty special”.
He commented: “It seems a bit crazy to be honest but yeah so happy. This week we are focusing on doing as well as possible and trying to win this tournament in Miami.
“But obviously very satisfied. What we’ve done as a team with Rajeev, to now also be number one in the teams’ standings, is something very special.”
