The British spy boss has warned all parents of children using viral app TikTok.
GCHQ head Sir Jeremy Fleming is urging parents to take a closer look at the app.
TikTok is an extremely popular video app with over a billion users logging in every month.
However, security experts have previously raised concerns about the company’s Chinese ownership.
Now the head of British cyber-espionage agency GCHQ has told parents to talk about online safety with children using the app.
He didn’t say teens should abandon the app — owned by Chinese company ByeDance — but simply be more careful about what they share.
“I would talk to my child about how they feel about their personal information on their device,” Sir Jeremy told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“Because I think it’s very important that we understand from an early age that nothing comes for free here.
“When we use these services, we exchange our data for them.
“And if it’s proportionate and we’re happy with the way data is being protected, then that’s great.
“Make the most of it, make those videos, use TikTok — but think before you do it.”
TikTok has a lot of great content for young people, but no social media app is completely safe.
Just last month, a hack was uncovered that allowed for account hijacking.
There were also concerns about spying while using the built-in TikTok web browser.
And TikTok has hosted countless dangerous viral challenges.
The app has come under multiple scrutiny for child safety, including an investigation by the California state earlier this year.
Sir Jeremy also warned of the long-term security risks of using Chinese technology.
And he even shared how China is building Star Wars-style weapons to take control of space.
