Rince Andrew has lost the liberty of the City of York after councilors voted to strip him of his honor following his settlement in a sex abuse case.
The vote came at a City of York council meeting on Wednesday, where several councilors and members of the public also called on Andrew to relinquish his title as Duke of York, thereby removing what Labor councilor Aisling Musson called: “That speck of a connection with this city.”
They said that if the duke failed to act, the queen or government should step in and remove the title.
Andrew is the first person to be deprived of the city’s liberty, city councilors have been told.
Lib Dem, Labour, Tory, Green and Independent Councilors came together to vote unanimously for Andrew to lose his honour. There were two formal abstentions – by the Lord Mayor and by the elected Lord Mayor.
More to come…
