British actor Robert Hughes, 73, who was jailed in Australia for child sex offenses in 2014, has been paroled and is due to be deported back to the UK before June 14
Actor and convicted sex offender Robert Hughes has been paroled in Australia and faces deportation to the UK.
Hughes, 73, was jailed in 2014 after being found guilty of 10 counts of sexual and indecent assault between 1984 and 1990.
He will be deported to the UK after his release from prison as he is an illegal citizen of Australia and renounced his Australian citizenship in 2020.
Hughes starred in the Australian sitcom Hey Dad! with, which aired from 1987 to 1994.
His victims include a family friend, friends of his daughter, and a child actor who worked with him.
The New South Wales state parole board said it accepted evidence that Hughes had been consistently rated as having a below-average risk of sexual reoffending.
Although Hughes denies the offenses, the trial prevents him from accessing sex offender treatment programs while incarcerated.
“Hughes and his wife had pledged that upon his return to the community, Hughes would seek treatment from a clinical psychologist who specializes in convicted sex offenders who are in denial about their crimes, to help with his rehabilitation and his risk of re-offending decrease,” he added.
Parole Board Chairman David Frearson SC said the board recognizes the “profound and detrimental impact on victims … which continues to this day and is likely to have lifelong consequences.”
“It must be particularly upsetting for victims to witness the perpetrator’s continued and persistent denials in the face of compelling and overwhelming evidence from multiple witnesses,” he added.
He will be released no later than June 14.
