British drivers warned they could face fines for the commonly used “friendly warning”.

Drivers across the UK could be fined for making a gesture towards other road users.

More than half of drivers on Britain’s roads are unaware that flashing your lights to let other drivers know you’re giving way can result in a fine.

2,000 drivers were tested on their knowledge of the rules of the road as part of a new analysis by findandfundmycar.com.

Other habits that could get drivers in hot water are honking their horns in anger or stopping to use their phones while the engine is still running.

Warning to UK drivers for ‘friendly warning’

Phil Morgan, head of findandfundmycar.com, said: “While the likelihood of being fined for any of the offenses is extremely low, they still aren’t worth the risk.

“While some of the offenses may not be widely known, nobody wants to risk their safety or have to pay a hefty fine for something they didn’t know was going to cost them, so it’s best to know about those sooner rather than later.” .

“What can be seen as a friendly warning to other drivers can actually have consequences. Speed cameras and cops are there to protect everyone, so it’s important that they are respected.”

The RAC added: “Headlight flashes should only be used to warn drivers of your presence on the road.

“Put simply, it’s prone to misinterpretation (especially since it has different meanings in other countries), so think carefully before reaching for the bars.”
