SUPERMASSIVE Games, developer of Until Dawn and The Quarry, was acquired by Nordisk Games.

This is the seventh gambling company currently owned by the Danish company.

The company also owns Avalanche Studios, a Swedish group that developed the Just Cause series, as well as Mad Max and Rage 2.

The purchase follows the company that previously bought 30.7% of Supermassive Games in March 2021.

At this point, the UK-based studio technically joined the ‘Nordisk family’. However, it was announced today (July 12) that Nordisk now owns ‘100%’ the studio.

Supermassive Games CEO Pete Samuels released a expression about the purchase and said:

“Having such a positive experience over the past year, it wasn’t a difficult decision when Nordisk Games wanted to consider increasing its investment.

“We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and the ownership of Nordisk Games only reinforces it.

“I’m very excited to see where the security this partnership offers and continued access to Nordisk Games’ expertise will take us next.”

Supermassive Games’ latest game, The Quarry, was released in June and received positive reviews.

It was the fourth best-selling game in the UK for the week it was released, with the vast majority of sales coming from PlayStation users.

In addition to developing its own games, Supermassive Games also works on projects for other studios.

In collaboration with Japanese publisher Bandai Namco, the studio ported Little Nightmares 2 to Google Stadia and created an improved version of the game for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Nordisk Games was originally formed to invest in gaming companies from Nordic countries such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

However, Supermassive Games is not the first non-Nordic company to have been bought by Nordisk Games.

In 2020, the company bought MercurySteam, a Spanish developer best known for creating Metroid: Samus Returns.

Supermassive Games is currently working on The Devil in Me, the fourth game in its Dark Pictures Anthology.

At the time of writing, there is no specific release date for the game, but the company has announced that it will be released this fall.
