British MP convicted of sexual assault – POLITICO

A British Conservative MP found guilty this week of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy has announced his resignation, triggering a by-election at his seat in Wakefield, Yorkshire.

Imran Ahmad Khan said in a Explanation posted on Twitter that it was “intolerable” that his constituents were not being adequately represented while he was fighting the conviction.

The Wakefield constituency was held by Labor from 1932 until Khan won it for the Conservatives in 2019.

On Monday, Southwark Crown Court found Khan guilty of groping the teenager at a party in Staffordshire in 2008.

He was immediately expelled from the Conservative Party but initially said he would remain as MP.

Khan continues to deny the offense and has said he will appeal. British MP convicted of sexual assault - POLITICO
