Ukraine: UK, US volunteers attack Russian transporters
The son of a former Royal Marine MP is believed to be part of a squadron that shot down a Russian transport in Ukraine.
The armored BTR blew up after being attacked during a fierce battle at an undisclosed location in the war-torn country.
Soldier Ben Grant is said to have been among a group of British, American and Canadian volunteer fighters involved in the skirmish.
The 30-year-old is the son of Tory MP Helen Grant, who represents Maidstone and The Weald.
Footage shared on social media shows the soldiers grappling with the Soviet-era aircraft carrier.
After being hit by the launchers fired by the volunteers, the BTR was reportedly destroyed when unfired ammunition exploded.
The clip shows about four men in formation with explosions in the background as one member yells, “Go, go, go!”
The group emerges from the undergrowth in an open field, narrowly missing being hit by the armored vehicle.
A man yells, “Shoot it!” and another soldier tries to fire a launcher, which fails.
Another soldier then successfully fires his own launcher – presumably an RGW-90-HH – and it hits.
They then retreat to nearby woods as the blasts continue.
One of the squadrons yells “it’s facing us” and another warns “retreat”.
In separate drone footage, apparently from the same incident, the BTR can be seen exploding and shrapnel flying off.
Twitter account Ukraine Weapons Tracker – posted the clips with the caption: “Foreign volunteers (Americans, British and possibly Canadians) aimed an RGW-90 HH launcher at a Russian BTR-80 APC, damaging it and leaving the ammunition burn.
“Note that a Czech RPG-75M doesn’t seem to work properly.”
Father of three, Mr Grant left the UK for Ukraine in March.
He previously served as a Commando in the Royal Marines for five years, including in Afghanistan.
That I paper reports that he is one of the soldiers in the BTR video.
He previously said he entered Ukraine without telling his MP mother, Helen, 60.
He said the guard : “I was not sent, have nothing to do with the government, nothing with my mother.
“I just want to get this straight, on my own I have decided to do this. I didn’t even tell my mom, but it is what it is.”
Mr Grant left the Royal Marines after admitting he attacked two men in a nightclub after they shouted racial slurs.
