A former British Army sniper saw firsthand the “atrocities” committed by Russian forces occupying Ukrainian territory near Kyiv.

Shane Matthew, 34, spent about a month in the war-torn country on Ukraine’s front lines and witnessed the horrors of the Russian invasion.

The former British Army sniper has seen plenty of combat since arriving in the battle-ravaged country as part of the Foreign Legion of Ukraine’s territorial defense.

The group was founded by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged foreigners to come to Ukraine to help fend off Vladimir Putin’s war machine.

A fully qualified field medic, Mr Matthew started out in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment at Portsmouth before leaving to try his hand as a private military contract.

He has combat experience in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, but described Ukraine as “one of the most terrifying experiences of my life”.

Mr Matthew, who works at Crimsham Farm in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, left his home in Chichester last month to help Ukrainian nationals defend their home from Russian invaders.

He “snuck back home” on Saturday night after training more than 1,000 Ukrainian volunteers in basic first aid and basic soldier work.

Although impressed by the fighting prowess of the Ukrainian people and optimistic about his chances against the Russians, Mr. Matthew was appalled by what he saw.

He said: “We were stuck outside Bucha and I fought for four days. When we managed to take control of the city, we found out what’s on the news right now.

“Streets littered with corpses. Children with their hands tied and their heads shot off. It’s beyond horrible.”

Determined to document the plight, Mr. Matthew plans to return to Ukraine in a few weeks, taking a camera to share the truth with as many people as possible.

He added: “I want to photograph what happened and tell the public that war crimes were being committed. I want people to see exactly what’s going on.”

Mr Matthew flew to Poland early last month before crossing the border and meeting a Ukrainian colonel who agreed to “arm” him and 21 other volunteer militants.

From there, the experienced sniper traveled to the besieged capital of Ukraine and transported around 60 kg of medical supplies that had been donated to him.

The former military contractor went to the front lines, helping to treat wounded Ukrainians and training civilians rebelling against Putin’s forces.

Harrowing images of the devastation caused by the occupation have emerged since Russian forces withdrew from Buch and Irpin, just outside Kiev.

Civilians were shot with hands tied behind their backs and mass graves were uncovered, along with allegations that women were raped and killed in front of their children.

President Zelenskyy told the UN Security Council yesterday (Tuesday) that there was “not a single crime” that Russian troops had not committed in Bucha.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) opened an investigation into allegations of war crimes and could issue arrest warrants to bring the perpetrators to justice in The Hague.
