A British teacher has expressed his fear as he prepares to try to flee Kyiv with his fiancée and son.
Paul Hodgson decided to stay in the Ukrainian capital with his family, but has since been told to leave by the embassy as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine becomes more and more intense.
Appearing on Lorraine today, he said: “It’s a case of wait and see, if we can get through it and I’ve determined if that’s what we have to do. do and we have to leave or not, we will all leave together.
“I think after the events of last night and this morning, it’s time for us to go and we are leaving Kyiv on an evacuation bus to school. Probably going south to Cherkasy and hopefully after that. to Lviv.
“It’s possible to cross the border into one of the countries. Possibly Slovakia, which looks like a pretty open border at the moment.”
When asked about whether he finds it scary, he said: “You don’t often find yourself in the middle of a fight do you? So this is something of a new territory for all of us. Everyone’s scared, everyone’s scared, and everyone’s gathering around bomb shelters or listening to what the sirens are saying.
“Even now I can still hear loud noises in the distance but I know it’s getting closer. There’s more action today than yesterday.”

He added that now is the “window of opportunity” and it is becoming “too dangerous to stay”.
Paul revealed that schools are closed but learning is still online.
“One thing that surprised us was the speed with which it happened,” he said. “Everyone knows that the Russian army is very well equipped and despite the fact that the Ukrainian army is digging, and they will continue to dig it – they will fight to the death in bitterness – but I think it is what would make it dangerous, civilians.
