Following pop icon Britney Spears’ announcement that she is expecting her third child on Monday night, sources close to the star have revealed the pregnancy is yet another victory against her toxic family

She wasn’t long out of school uniform when she had her first child. Granted, that was the school uniform in her infamous (Hit Me) Baby, One More Time video. But at 24, Britney Spears was still the fresh-faced girl next door.
Few would have believed at the time that the next 16 years would be dominated by her breakdown and mental health struggles — and that her mothering experience would be marked by depression, controversy, custody battles and the constraints of her draconian guardianship.
But after the singer was finally freed from her father Jamie’s control following a public court battle last November, Britney was finally allowed to become the vivacious, independent woman she’s always sung about.
So it’s no coincidence, the first big life decision she made is to get pregnant again.
Having that third baby – with her longtime rock Sam Ashgari – will be the makeover the 40-year-old is longing for, though she loves sons Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden, 15.
It’s particularly poignant when Britney claimed the conservatory had forced her to use contraception since 2007 – which also made the announcement of her pregnancy in the early hours of Tuesday morning an announcement of something else – another win against her toxic family.
The question is what happens now: will a new baby Britney ease the notorious tensions between her and her father and younger sister Jamie-Lynn?
Or is Britney about to get her revenge by proving she can handle life without her?
“The pregnancy is wonderful news for Britney,” says a longtime close business associate. “There was a lot of turbulence in her early years with the boys. She was young, promoting her music, recording, doing whatever the record company needed, and running her family. It was a lot of pressure.
“This time she is in full control for the first time. She can have the baby on her own terms. It’s her chance to find the right path as a mother.”
Britney will be almost 41 when she is born, while fiancé, fitness trainer and Iranian model Sam turns 29 this month.
The biggest difference between having her first and third child will be the changing world attitude towards mental health.
She suffered from perinatal depression during her previous pregnancies. It can cause suicidal thoughts and begins when the woman is still pregnant and lasts up to a year after that. In hindsight, it perfectly explains their subsequent downward spiral.
“It’s hard because when I was pregnant I had perinatal depression,” she said in her emoji-strewn post yesterday. “I have to say it’s absolutely awful. Women didn’t talk about it back then – some thought it was dangerous for a woman with a baby to complain like that. But now women talk about it every day… thank god we don’t have to keep this pain as a reserved, proper secret…”.
A source close to former chef Jamie, who denies being personally involved in birth control issues, stressed that concerns raised in court documents for last year’s Conservators case “didn’t go away simply because it was ended.” .
They added: “In fact, he’ll worry that pregnancy will only confuse her.”
The documents, authored by Jamie’s attorney Vivien Thoreen, say the statesmen have no idea about “all the addiction and mental health issues” Britney has “battled” with.
Her story began like a fairy tale – her talent catapulted her from a trailer park in Louisiana, first to Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, and then as a real-life pop princess.
But when she married backup dancer Kevin Federline in July 2004, Britney had already raised eyebrows a few months earlier with her 55-hour marriage to school friend Jason Alexander.
Brit and Kevin, who left his pregnant girlfriend to be with the singer, had Sean Preston in October 2005, then Jayden in October 2006, but filed for divorce two months later, citing irreconcilable differences — Kevin was struggling with fame .
Soon her fairy tale wasn’t looking so rosy.
She was slammed for her parenting skills, partying with Paris Hilton and riding with toddler Sean on her lap.
Then came the headsharing glitch in 2007 – one that would be viewed very differently today. Instead, at the time, she was sent to rehab, beaten with the conservatory, and the boys were placed in Kevin’s sole care, leaving her with visitation rights only.
The pair battled in court for years and eventually settled on 70/30 joint custody in favor of Kevin, but tensions mean the boys have had “very few visits” to Britney’s house in recent years.
“They still think the world of her,” says the source. As does Britney of them, saying on Instagram: “They are both extremely talented and I am so incredibly blessed to have these two little men in my life!!!”
Blessed may she be, but there’s no denying that this time around, Britney will hopefully be the kind of mom she’s always wanted to be — minus the drama.
