Britney Spears pop song featured in Broadway musical

A musical about feminist princesses using hit songs by Britney Spears will premiere on Broadway this summer.

nce Upon A One More Time, featuring Spears hits including Oops!… I Did It Again, Lucky, Stronger and Toxic, will begin performing in May at the Marquis Theater in New York.

The musical features an origin story written by Jon Hartmere about princesses from classic fairy tales — Cinderella, Snow White, and The Little Mermaid — who are transformed after reading The Feminine Mystique, a text landmark in feminism.

The musical is another step in Britney Spears’ independence following her conservatorship (PA) lawsuit.

Once Upon a Time was first performed at the Washington-based Shakespeare Theater Company, known for its more formal offerings. It will be directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid. The cast will be announced later.

The proven use of hit songs to propel a Broadway musical has recently led to performances with music by The Temptations, Bob Dylan, The Go Go’s, Tina Turner and Alanis Morrisette.

Many of Spears’ hits are in &Juliet — a jukebox musical currently playing on Broadway in honor of one of her screenwriter and producer partners, Max Martin.

The musical is another step in Spears’ independence after her conservatorship case gained national attention as she struggled to regain control of her finances and livelihood. Britney Spears pop song featured in Broadway musical
