Britain will work with the US and Australia to develop hypersonic weapons to counter the threat from Russia and China.

Russia claims it used its Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in attacks on Ukraine last month in what appears to be the first time they have been used in a war.

And China has also ramped up its development of hypersonic weapons, which are reportedly capable of traveling at up to 25 times the speed of sound.

Now, following a call between leaders of the new defense pact, Britain has agreed to work with the United States and Australia on hypersonic weapons and electronic warfare capabilities.

The AUKUS alliance, launched last September, resulted in Australia ditching a French submarine deal in favor of a US-UK-backed nuclear submarine program — which caused the French government caused outrage.

In a joint statement, AUKUS leaders Johnson, US President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said they were pleased with the progress of Australia’s conventionally-armed nuclear-powered submarine program and that the allies were working on others areas too.

“We also committed today to launch new trilateral cooperation on hypersonic and counter-hypersonic and electronic warfare capabilities,” the statement said.

The US and Australia already have a hypersonic weapons program called SCIFiRE, an acronym for Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment.

British officials said that although Britain would not join the deal, the countries would work together on research and development in the area to expand options.

Biden’s government is investing in research and development of hypersonic missiles as February’s Russian invasion of Ukraine heightened concerns over European security.

“In the face of Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified and unlawful invasion of Ukraine, we reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to an international system that respects human rights, the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes without coercion,” the leaders said, adding They also reaffirmed their commitment to a “free and open Indo-Pacific”.

Russia said it launched a “military special operation” in Ukraine on February 24 to demilitarize its neighbor.

Asked about the cooperation agreement between the UK, the US and Australia on hypersonic weapons, China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun warned against measures that could fuel a crisis like the Ukraine conflict in other parts of the world.

“Anyone who doesn’t want to see the Ukraine crisis should refrain from doing things that could lead other parts of the world into such a crisis,” Zhang told reporters.

“As the Chinese proverb says, if you don’t like it, don’t force it on others.”
