Stocking up on snacks for a flight or having breakfast before your flight is part of the airport experience – but it could take a toll on you holidays Budget.
That’s because the average UK family of four spends £100 on pre-flight snacks and meals, according to a new study by Holiday Extras.
Travelers from the UK spend around £26.30 each while killing time before boarding their plane. That’s quite a jump from pre-pandemic when they were spending around £21.
Meals and snacks were the main culprits when it came to the most popular choices, although 78% of respondents admit they always have “one last real cup of tea” before traveling abroad.

The temptation to shop duty free is also hard to resist, with almost half of Britons admitting they have bought items either on impulse or just to pass the time.
Still, it was for the majority of travelers to stock up on groceries and drinks that added up to the cost before they even boarded their flight.
In some cases, it might actually be cheaper to just book you and your family into an airport lounge that includes free snacks and drinks. (Not to mention all the other added perks like cozier waiting areas and quieter rooms if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the airport).
According to Holiday Extras, there are airport lounges in the UK you can book from £15 per adult or £9 per child – which is a lot cheaper than spending an average £100 on food.
Elizabeth Hogg, Chief Operating Officer at Holiday Extras, said: “Our latest research suggests that pre-flight airport lounge bookings could actually be a false economy. We offer airport lounges from as little as £15 for an adult and £9 for a child, and even the more expensive airport lounges start at £26.
“In the two years since we first conducted this survey, UK air travelers have gone from £21 for waiting to board to £26 – mostly for things they would have enjoyed as part of the fare in a lounge be able!”
