The Home Office has warned of 10-week waiting periods for extensions.

That means those looking to flee the country when schools close for the summer on July 18 must renew their passports NOW.

A whopping four and a half million Britons could put their holiday at risk if their passport is not valid when they leave.

There have been long delays as the passport office processes renewals – and Brits are making furlough plans again after years battered by Covid-19.

Demand for insurance has actually doubled in recent months, according to Co-op Travel, as Brits rush to check their documents.

According to the passport office, seven percent of the population’s passports are likely to expire before the schools close in July.

Most Britons have been waiting for a holiday since before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the travel industry – so travelers need to know their passport’s expiry date.

It is illegal to travel with an expired passport and most European countries require passports to be valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure.

Some destinations may require passports issued within the last ten years, so always keep your destination’s requirements in mind.

Graham Ward-Lush, tour guide at Co-op Insurance, told the Mirror: “Many of us will not have had a proper summer holiday since 2019 and we know millions of Brits across the country are eagerly awaiting this year’s short break, especially since Most travel restrictions have now been lifted.

“But with many passports sitting in a drawer over the last two years, we urge travelers to check the expiry date on their own passports and those of family members as well today.

“Many families in England and Wales will be looking to get away at the end of July, which means May 9 is a good deadline to set yourself to ensure new documents come back in time.

“There can’t be a more heartbreaking scenario than digging up a passport the night before you travel, only to find it’s out of date.”

The cost of a passport renewal ranges from £75 to £85 and applications can be submitted digitally via the government’s online service or through a local post office.

If you’re in a hurry, there’s an option to apply for an expedited passport, although people are struggling to get appointments due to high demand.

The service costs more than the regular passport application, with a charge of £122 for a child pass or £142 for an adult pass.
