Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Amy Santiago Built Around Melissa Fumero .’s Anxiety

With each passing episode of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” Amy Santiago grew increasingly anxious and awkward, a character trait that Melissa Fumero believes was added after she auditioned for the character. In one Interview on Buzzfeed last year, the actress explained how Amy was originally written a lot like Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) and how she evolved with each new draft.
Here’s what the actress had to say:
“I did [audition for Amy originally], but she was very different in the audition. She’s really confident, like a tough girl, you know? It’s funny because especially seeing how Rosa turns out, it’s almost like the original version of Amy and Rosa would be too similar. I miss my test with Andy [Samberg] – even the motivation is different. She always tries to get ahead of him, and has a real ability to compete with them. “
