Bruno Fernandes continues his ‘special relationship’ with Manchester United by signing a new deal

Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract to extend his stay at Manchester United until summer 2026 with an option for another year.

The midfielder made an immediate impression when he joined Old Trafford from Sporting in January 2020 and has so far scored 49 goals and provided 39 assists in 117 games.

Although his form has been under scrutiny lately, the 27-year-old is seen as an important part of United’s squad as they look to appoint a new permanent manager this summer.

Fernandes said: “From the moment I joined Manchester United I had a special relationship with the club and our amazing fans. I grew up with this team and dreamed of one day having the chance to play here. That dream is now a reality and an honor.

“Even after two years it still feels great to be able to perform at Old Trafford, hear the fans sing my song and score in front of the Stretford End. It’s a true privilege to wear this jersey and fight for our incredible club.

“There is so much more I want to achieve here and I know the same goes for the rest of the squad and staff.

“Above all, we want to give the fans the success they deserve. We have shared some great moments over the past few years but the best is yet to come from me and this team.”

The new deal adds just 12 months to the five-and-a-half-year deal Fernandes signed on his arrival at Manchester two years ago, but it’s more about financially rewarding a player who has twice been named the club’s player of the year than the immediate one need to bind him to longer deadlines.

By the time Fernandes joined United they had struggled through the first half of the 2019/20 season, amassing 34 points from 24 games, but following Fernandes’ debut Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went unbeaten for the remainder of the league season.

Fernandes’ form has noticeably deteriorated this season, although he still has nine goals and 14 assists, and United recognized the need to bring his salary up to similar levels to other first-team players.

Director of Football John Murtagh said: “Everyone is aware of the importance of Bruno to Manchester United. His records for goals and assists are phenomenal and he has shown remarkably consistent performances since joining the club.

“Bruno’s pace of work, dedication and fantastic attitude is exactly what we expect from a Manchester United player. He is the ultimate professional with many fantastic attributes to push the high standards required to play for this great club.

“Bruno, like everyone at the football club, remains hugely ambitious and determined to achieve lasting success on the pitch so that we can fight for titles again.” Bruno Fernandes continues his ‘special relationship’ with Manchester United by signing a new deal
