Bruno Fernandes has risked the wrath of Manchester United fans with his candid admission about the way the Red Devils performed against Brighton.

United were left humbled at AMEX Stadium on Saturday with the Seagulls claiming a dominant 4-0 win. Ralf Rangnick’s side put in a terrible performance, conceding three goals in eleven minutes of the second half to lose.

It was a defeat that also confirmed United will not take part in next season’s edition of the Champions League. While the Red Devils’ chances of a place in the top four were slim early in the game, they still had an opportunity to close the gap on Arsenal.

Although United were at risk of missing out on a Champions League spot, he was lackluster for much of the proceedings. And Fernandes has now claimed Brighton were more determined to win than their visitors, risking the wrath of his side’s supporters.

“Brighton played a lot better than us. They wanted more than us, they deserve more than us to win this game. They created a lot of chances and could have scored a lot more. Of course we had our chances too, but it was not so.” That’s not enough and we know it,” Fernandes told MUTV.

“They were more aggressive than us from the start of the game. We weren’t strong enough on the second ball in that game. We made some mistakes defensively and offensively, we weren’t able to score goals.”

The Brighton brawl is just the latest low in what has been a terrible campaign for United. But Fernandes insisted they need to focus ahead of their last game of the season against Crystal Palace in two weeks.

“The whole season has been like this, ups and downs, the downs have been too low and we have one game left. We have to win this game and that’s all we can do. The worst thing is training in the next two weeks,” added Fernandes.

“The game is far away but we have to keep our focus, do our best and understand that the last game is important for us and we have to win it. As always, we must be thankful [to the fans]they’ve gone through bad times this season seeing their club and like I said, they’ve supported us all season.”

With just one game left of the season, United’s best chance of finishing sixth is their last qualifying spot for the Europa League. But if they are defeated by Palace and Wolves win all of their last three games, the Red Devils could drop to eighth place, a position that doesn’t include European qualification.

Fernandes’ admission he doesn’t want to be at Old Trafford could affect new boss Erik ten Hag as the current squad are all playing for their future. The Dutchman will take over at the end of the season with a major squad overhaul almost certain to happen.
