Bullshit or not, there’s something comforting about a fortune teller telling you that everything will be fine in the end

About 20 years ago and looking for something different on a Monday night that didn’t involve the gym, a friend and I went to see a fortune teller.

We went in a spirit of good old-fashioned fun but with an insatiable curiosity about what life had in store for us. We were both single and generally restless. She was glued to the bottom rung of the professional ladder; I bounced from one terrible temp job to the next. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that a large part of us wanted to know that life would eventually turn out well. And let’s face it, people who are perfectly happy with their lives aren’t usually in the habit of seeing fortune tellers.
