Bungie confirms Destiny 2 will include an Easter egg teasing its next game

If you’re curious to see what Bungie is working on next, there’s a hint of the studio’s next project hidden somewhere in Destiny 2. When former Destiny 2 director Christopher Barrett was asked Twitter (via GamesRadar) If there was any hint of Bungie’s new IP anywhere in her massive first-person shooter, Barrett would simply reply, “Yes.”

Barrett followed his brief reply with another one-word tweet saying “Maybe” along with a smiley face shaped like the moon. This led some Destiny fans to believe that the clue is hidden somewhere on Earth’s moon from Destiny 2’s Shadowkeep expansion. Despite the hint, the Destiny community has yet to find the Easter egg. So if you’re a Destiny 2 fan, it might be time to search the moon!

Barrett is currently the director of an unannounced Bungie game, having left the director’s chair of Destiny 2 in 2018. Joe Blackburn is the current director of Destiny 2.

This isn’t the first time Bungie has hidden an Easter egg in a game for its next project. Halo 3: ODST, released in 2009, featured a poster that read “Destiny Awaits.” The teaser has since been removed.

Very little is known about Bungie’s new IP. According to a 2020 job posting, Bungie is working on a “comedic” game that will feature “quirky characters.” And the game will apparently feature “a variety of pursuit and loot systems” and “basic RPG” systems, so we can potentially expect some mechanics similar to Destiny. Another job posting from last year suggests the project is a “character-driven” multiplayer game. We don’t know when the game is coming, but in 2019 Bungie announced plans to release at least one non-Destiny game by 2025.

Bungie was also acquired by PlayStation earlier this year, but new games in development will not be exclusive to PlayStation. Sony wants to help Bungie turn its franchises into films that could include Destiny and any new IP the studio is working on.
