Police say the driver of a bus who killed 14 people in a collision with an electronic traffic sign did not have a license and could be prosecuted

The driver of a bus that killed 14 people was high on the drug crystal meth at the time of the collision, officials say.

Police in East Java, Indonesia, also said the driver did not have a driver’s license when the vehicle carrying 34 people collided with an electronic traffic sign on Monday (May 16).

According to reports, the bus was traveling on the Surabaya-Mojokerto Toll Road at the time of the horrific accident.

Videos from the scene showed medical teams pulling the injured and dead from the bus, with the injured then rushing to a hospital in Mojokerto.

There were no skid marks on the road near the spot.

The preliminary investigation by East Java Police suggested that the senior bus driver was the primary cause of the fatal accident Coconuts Jakarta.

The bus, operated by tour company PO Ardiansyah, went back to Mojokerto after trips to Wonosobo and Yogyakarta.

East Java Police Traffic Director Latief Usman said: “When we examined the driver, there was evidence that he used crystal meth.

Police have yet to formally file charges but are continuing to collect evidence related to the collision, which injured another 19 people.

They also said the driver was actually a backup driver who appeared to have gotten behind the wheel after the bus stopped at a rest area. He had driven 17 km (10 miles) before hitting the traffic sign.

Travel company PO Ardiansyah is also under investigation by authorities and could be prosecuted for neglect if its bus drivers are found to be unqualified for the job.

The East Java Police preliminary investigation concluded that the driver, identified only as AF, was the primary cause of the accident.
