Business Post editor Richie Oakley leaves to join a communications firm

Richie Oakley, the editor of the Business Post, is stepping down from his position to join a communications firm.

Staff at the newspaper were informed this afternoon of Mr Oakley’s decision to step down as editor and chief content officer “effective immediately”.

Mr. Oakley is leaving to take on a new role with a Murray Group PR and communications firm.

Mr. Oakley was appointed editor of the Business Post in 2019. He was Editor of The Times Irish edition from 2015 until that newspaper ceased publication in June 2019, having previously worked for The Sunday Tribune and The Sunday Times.

Business Post chief executive Sarah Murphy confirmed the news to staff, saying Mr Oakley had made a “remarkable impact on the organization” during his three-year tenure and said he was “sorely missed”.

Ms Murphy said the content of the SBP has continued to grow under Mr Oakley’s stewardship, praising his “commitment, dedication and leadership”.

It has been announced that Gillian Nelis, Deputy Editor, will become Deputy Editor from today, while a recruitment process to appoint a new Editor will begin in the coming weeks.

The Business Post was bought by Kilcullen Kapital Partners in 2018 from Galway businessman and seaman Enda O’Coineen.

Mr. Oakley will join Murray Group as Director of Corporate and Treasury.

Pat Walsh, Chief Executive of Murray Group said: “Our management consulting practice has always been led by seniors and we are delighted to welcome Richie to the team. With experience in news, business, politics and driving at four national publications over three decades, I believe Richie will bring further weight and insight to our senior corporate and public affairs offering.”

Mr Oakley said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Editor of the Business Post and am very proud of the team we have expanded and hired, who I will miss dearly. I am also very proud of the journalism we have produced. Joining the Murray team feels like a logical progression at this point in my career, which I’m really looking forward to.” Business Post editor Richie Oakley leaves to join a communications firm
